Frequently Asked Questions

Please check out the below before getting in touch.

Where is my Salvage payment?

Your vehicle is likely on a storage period.
This is around 4 weeks from the day it is written off or until you are paid the pre-accident payment whichever comes first.
Payment is sent out by cheque when this period ends.

NO FINANCE
payment is sent automatically you do not need to call us.

FINANCE
Please see below section – My vehicle has finance.

Cheques can sometimes go missing in post or if we’re not informed of an address change.
If you suspect this is the case please email us on rytonbreakers@aol.com with your registration and we’ll look into it.

If for any reason your cheque is not cleared by your bank or your bank does not accept cheques.
Again, email us on rytonbreakers@aol.com to resolve.

My vehicle has finance – What do I do?

You do NOT need to resolve the finance until you receive the pre-accident payment.
If you do clear any finance yourself however, we can still pay your salvage. Contact us if you’ve done this.

When funds received, you are legally obliged to clear your finance.
If there is not enough to clear – see below (I’ve not received enough)

Once you’ve cleared the finance, just email rytonbreakers@aol.com some proof to receive the salvage funds.
This can be:

– Clearance letter / email
– Evidence of settlement amount and something showing you’ve paid it (i.e bank statement)
– Screenshot of finance portal confirming settled.
– Email from finance company advising they have no interest in the vehicle.

I’ve not received enough to clear my finance…

STEP 1
Request a settlement quote from your finance company.
Is the amount you have + the salvage value enough to clear it?

YES – Pay the finance down to the salvage value or less, send us some proof by email we will clear the finance off for you.
NO

STEP 2

Check if you have GAP insurance, if so please contact them to start a claim and inform us.
Note finance GAP Policies will only get involved if the vehicle total value including salvage is less than finance owed
.
If you have a return to value GAP or vehicle replacement GAP policy it is worth contacting your policy provider at this time.

No GAP insurance? –

STEP 3

Contact your finance company, explain what has happened and ask for a resolution.
Ask if they will remove the HPI marker on receipt of the salvage funds – We need an email from them to confirm they agree this.

At this stage it is important to keep us updated with what your finance company advise.
If they are being difficult, let us know we can contact them to assist.

If not resolved, we eventually contact them directly…
This stage can have financial impact to you, impact credit file / future applications of finance.

Any further concerns please call us on 0191 413 2746 or email rytonbreakers@aol.com.

V5 Logbook (SORN/Registered keeper) – What do I do?

If your vehicle has a private numberplate please see section below first – How do I keep my private plates?
DVLA will send a new V5 and the current one becomes void.

Your claim provider will ask for the V5 logbook,
We suggest taking a photograph of all pages, tear the yellow traders section off and post the rest.

When we collect your vehicle, we will text asking for the reference number on the V5.
This is 11 digits on the front usually located here:

You can text or email us this number, We do look to SORN & Update DVLA online for you with it… however
UPDATING THE DVLA IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY!

SORN

We suggest declaring SORN when your vehicle is collected, you can do that here:
Register your vehicle as off the road (SORN) – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

REGISTERED KEEPER

ONLY When salvage payment received we suggest sending the yellow traders slip to DVLA with our details on:
Ryton Breakers Salvage ltd.
Barmoor Quarry
Ryton
NE403BQ

My V5 says invalid / unable to find details?
You may have an older V5 document if you’ve changed address for example.
Please contact DVLA if this is the case to ensure records updated.

How do I keep my Private Plates?

If you have a private/ cherished number plate and wish to retain it,
fill the DVLA online retention form the moment the vehicle has been written off and you’ve agreed for salvage.

You can do this here:
Private (personalised) number plates: Take a private number off a vehicle – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

If this form is not working, likely the CAT A/B/N/S marker has been put on the vehicle already which can stop it working.
To resolve, you must post a V317 form to DVLA urgently first class recorded post.
You can get these from Post Offices or print your own:
form V317 – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

The cost is around £80 this includes the fee to allocate to your new vehicle.
You may be able to claim this cost back, contact your claim provider.

It is your responsibility to retain your plate!
If a vehicle is collected and sold on as salvage or destroyed as scrap before you have completed retention…
you will lose the rights to the plate and we cannot get it back for you.

For security we do not post physical plates back to clients. You would need to get new plates manufactured at an authorised retailer.

Once you have retained, the DVLA will issue a new V5 logbook for the salvage vehicle.
See V5 Logbook above / send the info from this logbook to us.

I’ve received a fine / Police NIP.

If you’ve received a fine / NIP for a vehicle we bought as salvage.
Chances are we never received your V5 information to update DVLA / this was never done.
As above is your responsibility to update DVLA

If someone has bought the vehicle to repair, we rely on them completing a V62 form to update DVLA, We hold no responsibility over this process.
We can take no responsibility for fines but will assist in appeals with information.

Fines (parking / ULEZ / Tolls / Non-tax etc.)
Please contact us with V5 details to ensure DVLA updated / ensure you are not registered keeper to prevent further fines.
We will update / backdate if not done, if V5 invalid / other issue you need to contact DVLA.
Appeal the fine as soon as possible, do not ignore it.

Police NIP
(Speeding etc.)
As above, contact us with V5 info to ensure vehicle out of your name.
Fill the NIP form with our details, We will forward buyer details to the Police when requested from them.
