My vehicle has finance – What do I do? +
You do NOT need to resolve the finance until you receive the pre-accident payment.
If you do clear any finance yourself however, we can still pay your salvage. Contact us if you’ve done this.
When funds are received, you are legally obliged to clear your finance. If there is not enough to clear – see below (I’ve not received enough)
Once you’ve cleared the finance, just email [email protected] some proof to receive the salvage funds. This can be:

Once you’ve cleared the finance, just email [email protected] some proof to receive the salvage funds. This can be:
- Clearance letter / email
- Evidence of settlement amount and something showing you’ve paid it (i.e bank statement)
- Screenshot of finance portal confirming settled
- Email from finance company advising they have no interest in the vehicle
I’ve not received enough to clear my finance… +
STEP 1
Request a settlement quote from your finance company.
Is the amount you have + the salvage value enough to clear it?
YES – Pay the finance down to the salvage value or less, send us some proof by email and we will clear the finance off for you.
NO
STEP 2
Check if you have GAP insurance, if so please contact them to start a claim and inform us. Finance GAP policies will only get involved if the vehicle total value including salvage is less than finance owed.
If you have a return to value GAP or vehicle replacement GAP policy, it is worth contacting your policy provider at this time.
No GAP insurance?
STEP 3
Contact your finance company, explain what has happened and ask for a resolution. Ask if they will remove the HPI marker on receipt of the salvage funds – We need an email from them to confirm they agree this.
At this stage it is important to keep us updated with what your finance company advise. If they are being difficult, let us know and we can contact them to assist.
If not resolved, we eventually contact them directly… This stage can have financial impact to you, impact credit file / future applications of finance.
Any further concerns please call us on 0191 413 2746 or email [email protected].

How do I keep my Private Plates? +
If you have a private/cherished number plate and wish to retain it,
fill the DVLA online retention form the moment the vehicle has been written off and you’ve agreed for salvage.
You can do this here:
Take a private number off a vehicle – GOV.UK
If this form isn’t working, the CAT A/B/N/S marker may have been put on already.
You must post a V317 form to DVLA urgently first class recorded post:
Form V317 – GOV.UK
The cost is around £80 (includes the fee to allocate to your new vehicle). You may be able to claim this cost back. Contact your claim provider.
It is your responsibility to retain your plate!
If the vehicle is sold as salvage or scrapped before retention, you will lose the rights to the plate.
For security, we do not post physical plates. You would need to get new plates manufactured.
Once you retain, DVLA will issue a new V5. See V5 Logbook above / send us the info from this.
